    Problem with patch v8.50

I installed the patch for the upgrade and got this message - it has also informed me to use an earlier version of Actinic

    What have I done wrong?

Failed to create new field [sBarcodeTemp] in table [Product] - fatal error.
    Reported error was:

    Too many fields defined.

There are much better people than me to advise on this, but I do believe its always best to install the full version, as opposed to the patch.

You can download the 850 trial which is the full version.

Forgive my ignorance, but I haven't done a full Actinic upgrade before and I’m afraid, very afraid!

Would I be right in thinking that if I un-installed 8.04 and installed 8.5 all I would need to do is to import the 8.04 snapshot into 8.5 and all would be hunky-dory?

Hmmmm - Went to the Actinic download page and there is only the upgrade (usually they have the full version ) so I thought I would give it a go and it has crashed my V8 big style.

Dear Mr Actinic can we have the full version of 8.5 please

              Just found it here http://www.actinic.co.uk/about/v8.php4

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN UP TO DATE SNAPSHOT

The best way IMO is to uninstall 04 - then you will need to go into programe files and rename the V8 folder that is left as the uninstaller does not work correctly.

Install the full version of 8.5 and import your snapshot. if you are using designer or the like you will need to create new sites to import snapshots into.

Upgrade when you need to. Just a thought

As Malc states, clean install is always best.

But what we advise our clients is to view the changes made between patches and proceed to update ONLY if the changes are critical to your stores operation or they address a specific bug/security issue.

Now I am not saying do not keep up to date with the latest, I am just pointing out that in some cases, if the store works fine and none of the changes are applicable to your situation then leave it be until an update arrives that does address some of your needs.

Bear in mind that this is what we advise our clients and may not be suitable to all cases.

This applies pretty much to most software IMHO

Billy boy tells me to buy Vista, but I don't need to...so why should I?

I applied the patch but after reading the above, I am inclined to do the following. If anyone feels that it is the wrong way - please let me know! PLEASE!!!

                    1) Copy and save 'Site1' directory and tuck it away safely
                    2) Use the uninstaller to delete 804 patched to 850
                    3) Reboot
                    4) Clean install 850 from the full 30 day trial
                    5) Delete the new 'Site1' directory
                    6) Copy over the earlier saved Site1

                    Or is this too simplistic?

Sounds doomed to screw any scripts up to me!

From my expeience today upgrading over 40 sites it appears that the following can occur:

                          1. Any DW registered design will be lost

                          2. All sites will be removed from the file sites menu and you will need to re licence them using snapshots.

                          3. External CSS files are lost

                          4. Most perl scripts are overwritten - meaning any custom perl scripts will be lost eg checkout, norms plugins etc

There may be more but Im going to bed.

                            Malcolm,

Thankfully my upgrades all worked fine but I don't use external designs so maybe thats why! The sites disappearing is a strange one, mines all show correctly. And I could be wrong but Im sure the perl scripts will be overwritten on any upgrade, so you are using the correct verion of the scripts.
                            Cheers

I upgraded today and all three v8 sites came in fine. Like David, I have no external designs.

When I get a pretty picture from a designer, I chop it into fragments and div them in. Adobe now own DreamWeaver - the Company that is every dark thing ever said about the kind and generous chaps over at M$ - I'm not going to let that lot near a live site.
