    8.5 BUG - DW Edit

Just tried the edit in DW function and it has failed to open my design in DW - error says contains an invalid path.

On checking my registered design is no longer in my site1 file . This is possibly due to me having to relicence ALL my sites after installing 8.5 and inporting a snapshot - these snapshots did not contain my registered design. I thought this had been fixed in 04.

On recovering my outer layout design from a backup I now find that the DW extension does not work either it just gives an error configuration/commands/act_checkprops.htm was not found.

Net result = I can now not work on any sites

There are two problems as I see it:

    1. Installing 8.5 removes all sites from the file | Sites menu - this never happened in any previous upgrade. This means you have to create the site/s again using a snapshot - this snapshot dose not contain any registered design. When you try and use the edit in DW function it fails because it cannot find the registered design

Solution - prior to upgrading save a copy of your registered design so you can put it back in the site 1 folder.

    2. The DW extension does not work following upgrade. The reason in my case was that the Extension manager had turned off the extension during upgrade.

Solution - close DW and turn on the extension again in extension manager.

This is like a bad (re-occurring) dream.

These are exactly the kind of problems we were discussing the other day where my sites were failing.

I have the 'new and improved' version of 8.5 on my desktop, but i'm so scared of installing it because I cannot fall any further behind with my work.

Why do WE have to figure out solutions to these problems, and where is the testing that is taking place at Acinic? I honestly don't know what to do.

The upgrade has only officially been out a matter of hours, yet the forum is littered with problems.

Yep - Ive just finished reloading 40 sites and trying to get the registered designs to work again.

If you do try 8.5 make sure you have the registered designs stored separately - you may need them.

And another problem - it has wiped all the perl script mods I have done on every site.

Off to jump out the window now - why is it so hard

It's going to be another late night!

Of course, all my custom.css files have walked, as well as the DW stuff.

I've resigned myself to backing up my 'sites' folder as well as my backups folder -- just in case. I'm glad I did!

            Now where's that 'Pro-Plus'?

                      Hi Malcolm

I'm sorry to hear your upgrade experience has been so negative. I upgraded all my sites to 8.5.0 yesterday (which were a mixture of external and non-external designs) and they all upgraded fine. Additionally, no issues like this were reported during beta testing, or during our internal testing (where we tested upgrading lots of the snapshots we have received in support) so we need to get to the bottom of where these issues are arising from.
On checking my registered design is no longer in my site1 file . This is possibly due to me having to relicence ALL my sites after installing 8.5 and inporting a snapshot - these snapshots did not contain my registered design. I thought this had been fixed in 04.
This problem wasn't fixed in 8.0.4 - it was fixed in 8.5 - so you will find that any snapshots you take fro here on in will include your registered designs - but yes, all pre-8.5.0 sites will require separate backup of any registered external designs.
On recovering my outer layout design from a backup I now find that the DW extension does not work either it just gives an error configuration/commands/act_checkprops.htm was not found.
Did you upgrade the DW extension as well as upgrading 8.5.0 - the two are needed to work together. Or was this part to do with Dreamweaver turning off the extension when you upgraded. I didn't have DW open when I upgraded, which might be what meant I didn't have this happen to me.
                      1. Installing 8.5 removes all sites from the file | Sites menu - this never happened in any previous upgrade. OK - this is definitely not to do with some sort of problem in 8.5.0 - this is something specific to your Actinic installation that was on your PC. Probably uninstalling and re-installing the software is the best thing you could have done.
And another problem - it has wiped all the perl script mods I have done on every site.
Sorry about that - but this happens with upgrades to significant maintanence releases - there are Perl changes included with the release (to support all the new shipping functionality etc.) so it has to backup your customised scripts and and copy in the new ones, otherwise you would get loads and loads of script errors. You can use a tool like 'Compare IT' to compare the new perl scripts to yours if you want to remind yourself of what script modifications you have made.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply. All is well now after a busy day yesterday.

This was definately part of the problem and should be publicised.

Not really sure on this one - i got the error message and looked in extension manager and saw it had been turned off. When I turned it back on then all worked Ok.

Yes it has solved the problem - it was similar to the one I had the other day.

                        .

I figured it was all to do with the new shipping bits as Ive never had a problem before.

Could you put a note somewhere to warn people about the external design issue as I can see if they overwrite/delete the site1 folder they could loose it.

Really glad to hear you are up and running again. At your suggestion, I've added a note to the message at http://community.actinic.com/showthr...212#post150212 to make sure people backup their external designs safely.

Also, if you have made the same perl script customisation to several sites, don't forget you can just copy and paste scripts from site to site to save a bit of time.
