Hi Lee - thanks for your comments. Food for thought as always.
The problem with hierarchical exports is that if you have a large number of user-definable variables, this can basically exceed the program's capacity to handle them. We've increased this capacity in the next maintenance release so this should no longer be a problem.
It can happy for a variety of reasons - technical, human error, external factors (e.g. Vista coming along). Snapshots are especially difficult to nail down as they are a collection of technologies (page generation, database updates, file collection) so a fix to one area to fix a different issue will affect the operation of the snapshot. We usually catch the vast majority of these in code reviews and testing, but with v8, two or three have slipped through the net. Each time they do, we review what's happened, and update our procedures accordingly.
So there's my attempt at being transparent. Hope it helps in some way.
Hierarchical exports - what's happened there? These are fundamental to our use of the software without an array of snapshot solutions, how come they still trash on more than 12 months old software? Nobody communicates on these things and we are left thinking WTF is going on, does anybody care etc.
I guess, i and at least a few others, would love to understand how old bugs keep reappearing in new versions. It happens every single release, what is causing this?
So there's my attempt at being transparent. Hope it helps in some way.
