    Permissions problem

When I run the 'Test' on Advanced Network Setup I keep on getting this message:

You do not have write permissions to the cgi-bin directory "/public/www/cgi-bin/" or it does not exist.

I have spoken to Support and they have tested it and said it works for them and that it must be a Firewall issue, unfortunately my boss has fallen out with the contractor that setup the Firewall anf the router so I'm a bit stuffed. Has anybody else had this problem and are there any other things that could be causing it, the host for example?

Have you tried uploading the site, the contractor that set up you firewall must give you the passwords for this so someone else can access it.

sometime this error appears but the site still works and uploads ok, give it a go and see how you get on

If you still have problems, then save the nertwork settings to an external file and then copy and paste them here. More often than not, this error indicates a problem in the cgi-bin settings.

PS. Is this a windows or unix server?

Have you checked the permissions on the CGI bin, if these are not correct you can not write to it.

Someone here whould know more about clara, but i am sure they need to be 755

also have you done a complete site refresh

How do I check the Permissions on the CGI bin?

The thing is the Network Settings are identical on the old V6 Catalogue site which works fine. Support reckon that as our new router was installed before I did the upgrade the firewall on it is blocking the permissions.

(Unfortunately contacting the network chap is impossible as the last thing my boss said to him was f*** off! And we havn't paid him. I shall have to tell my boss that some humble pie needs to be consumed.)

Just a thought, has the pc you on got a modem if so set up a dial up connection then upplug the pc from your network then use the dial up to upload you site, then get around the router problemat a later date, im not convinced the router is stopping it,

a good test is to get a ftp program (filezilla) and connect to you site, if you can login and ftp files to and from then the issue is not with the router.

If you have dreamweaver 8 you can check them in there by logging into the server and right clicking on the folder(s) in question.

It's a Zyxel router, if that's any help. Is it worth speaking to my host (clarahost) to see if they can help?

It's worth checking the permissions on the server. To do this ftp into your site and then check your permissions using your ftp software. Most of the time this is just a case of right clicking on the cgi-bin folder and selecting 'permissions'.

I haven't seen a case of the router causing this error before so it's best to check everything else first.

                      Mike

PS. If Actinic support have checked your settings and can upload the site from their end then it does suggest something else is causing the problem. The only thing from my point of view is that I have difficulty thinking of a router setting that could cause this error and even greater difficulty thinking why such a setting should be enabled (if it even exists).

You should be aware that Clarahost have been having some real problems over the last few days.
We get intermittant permission and server problems reported.

It may be that you have settings problems, but it could also be that your settings are fine, and that clarahost is giving you the problems.
May be worth retrying at regular intervals, just in case, as the host problem comes and goes, and should clear eventually!

The weird thing is that I'm having no problems with the permissions on my existing site (Catalogue v6) only the V8 Business, and when Support tested it using my Network settings it worked after a couple of times, hence them thinking that it's a firewall issue.

it worked after a couple of times,
That's the problem though. This should work everytime, not just once after a few goes. It sounds to me like they had the problem as well.

I've got the site open in Explorer and have gone to properties for the CGI-bin and have got this, presumably this is where you set the permissions? o I need to change the 'write' permissions and does this open me up to attacks?
