error sending version negotiation request?

what the heck does this error mean - its generated when I change to Test mode and try to upload the site.

I've stepped through the wizard and each stage of the test confirms the settings are correct, but when I hit the upload button I get the message "error sending version negotiation request"

anyone with ideas please

found out this morning what it was,
the system was set to Actinic Hosting.
changed that back to my own hosting, problem went away.
perhaps a slightly more useful error message?

Next thing I did was to update the "test mode" web site - problem was I was in "live mode" at the time - luckily the site isn't live, so it wasn't difficult to correct the problem - simply wiped "live" out to prevent robots finding it earlier than I wanted. - swapped to "test mode" and re-uploaded.

one suggestion for the development team.
what about changing the background of the "Catalog Details" tab to a "pale pink" if I'm in "test mode" - different coloured background - warning
perhaps even a little install option somewhere to allow you to set the background colour to "pale puce" if you want.
