Shipping Question

My client sells books, CDs and DVDs. Obviously a books weight is much more than CDs and DVDs. My question is can I set up different shipping classes to different products or is it the case that only one shipping class can be applied to all of the products?

For example if someone bought 'book1' that cost £4.95 to send, is there an option to only charge £3 for a second copy of book1. While if someone else bought a copy of 'book2' that only costs £1.75 to send and £0.75 therefter.

If this can be done, how do I set a shipping class to a product?

You need to take a look at v8.5.0 as here you can create separate categories for books and CD's and also assign first order costs and subsequent order costs, thereby you can have categories for your Products and have a shipping based on categories.

The simple answer is to use the shipping by group with out weights

just to clarify you can not assign products to different groups and use the weight calculation as it will give you both options in checkout
