Nav list seperators - pipe or pic?

When seperating a list of nav links thus:

are there any accessibility or other issues that dictate the use of a gif image (as most Actinic styles use) as opoposed to simply using the keyboard '|' (pipe)?

I tend to go for the | option as will render if the user has images turned off and should be fractionally quicker to load than a GIF image. Aligning text alongside images can be a pain (specially if not tabled) so they use of plain text for me is preferable.

In v8 I thought most of the NAV separators were plain text and not images ... although tend to start with a clean install and not the themed layouts.

      Cheers Jont.
I also favour the good old | - I just wondered why Act went for the images (I think they are still there in 8, but will have to double check when back in front of my V8 PC).

Its probably to add the padding either side as they wish i would imagine.

I think in v8 they are using the pipe with some very nifty   to pad out the display ... which is nice in a world of CSS

That still makes an amazing appearance in the product layouts - that is one of the first things to go when I convert to a full CSS layout.
