    upgrade method

I'm just about ready to deploy a new V8 site, I've had the DB for ages, thus I plan to get a new snapshot from the client (to include updatedproducts and orders).

    My plan of action

    1 get v6 snapshot
2 upgrade DB to access2000 (to cure future DB issues as current DB is 97)
3 run upgrader to v8.04 (use client key to licence site) use default v8 theme
4 deploy partial design snapshot from my test machine (8.04)

Thus I will get latest products/orders and my design merged

One question that springs to mind is bestsellers and new products,I've created these as new sections, will these layouts and sections get incorporated into the design snapshot -the sections don't exsist in the current site? ie are they treated at sections or as layouts?

The answer lies in the "design" part of the snapshot ... this will export variables, layouts, selectors, additional files etc but not products, prices, sections etc. This would need to be done via a hierarchal import. Any new or modified layouts to the best sellers and new products will be picked up (assuming you tick the layout to be included) but the products and sections need populating.

yes thats why I asked the question, cos it doesn't seem clear.

If you look at the default theme ie exec when you first open actinic, along with the sections Books, clothes etc, there are 2 "sections" bestsellers and new products, if you use these sections along with default section layouts for Bestsellers and new products the sections are auto populated from the Marketing features (ie order file)

I would assume this would brought forward by the design snapshot? I suspect I am confusing myself and thus the issue by calling these "sections" as they are really just bestseller/new product lists, its just that they are created as sections and thus are not added to the design as a layout.

        Hi Jo

The 'Best Sellers' and 'New Products' sections are standard sections - they they will not be brought accross by a 'Partial Site Design'. They will be created via s standard snapshot or an import (but it's probably easier to just create them by hand ). The sections do not contain any products - they just contain a best seller list or a new products list. This is controlled by the 'Main Product Area Layout' layout setting, which you can edit within the 'Layout' tab of the sections.

So they are sections - but with non-standard inner layouts. Hope that makes sense.
