Choice reference numbers

Hi all
Does anyone know if you can give each component choice a indervidual reference number.

I know how to customise each product with its own ref number but I need a different ref number for each colour the product is available in. I dont want to duplicate the product in every colour, I simply wish to assign a ref number to each 'choice'.

Can this be done and if so how?

The usual way to do this is to create a full product for each colour and mark that product as 'hide on web site' and the use the associated product link on the main product colour choice to link to that hidden product.

This gives you unique product codes for each colour and individual colour stock control. Without it, if you run out of red, the website cannot know and customers can continue to order red until the other colour quantity(ies) are exhausted.
