search page result ie6 alignment issue

Hi,
Newbie in distress any help much appreciated.

Search results page formatting fine in ie7 generation browsers; the Product Sections list on left and search results on right.
Viewed in ie6 search results appear below the products sections list putting them off the screen.

Problem also exist when adding items to cart the confirmation appears below the product sections list therefore off screen. Auto forwarded after a few seconds as expected.

This is my first actinic website so I modified the existing "Executive" theme.

Most likely culprit is the containing table showing a huge width

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="10" width="955">

combining tables with a CSS layout is fine as long as table widths are smaller than the CSS container or percentage widths ... IE6 hates fixed width tables and CSS container layouts.

I dropped the Width for Main Area in the Site options and it has work on my test server.
