No Shipping Charge of 0kg Products

I am trying to exclude some items that are services from my standard fixed shipping charge. I have found threads for V7 but can't work out what I am doing wrong in V8. Most of my product detail weight boxes are blank. I have put the weight of the other products to 0. In business setting | shipping & Handling I have selected 'by zone and class. Under if shipping ban not defined I have checked 'use default charge' Default weight is set to 0.1kg.

Under the 'zone class' tab I have added a line 0 kg costs £0. The rest of the weights are set to my fixed postage charge.

When I test the site the shipping is always £3.95 even for the products defined as 0kg. Can anyone help?

    Best Wishes

Default weight is set to 0.1kg.
    Hi Geraldine,
I think its because setting the weight to zero will default to 0.1kg, ie. same as not entering a weight at all.

      Hello Geraldine

If you have explicitly set the weight to Zero for the service products and have corresponding zero-value entries in the shipping tables as well, then Actinic should only apply 0.00 as shipping charges. If however, you leave the weight fields blank in the product Details tab, then the default weight, i.e 0.1 kg in your case, will be considered and shipping charges applied accordingly.

I see that you are on v8.5.0, in which case the simplest way to exempt a product from any shipping charges is to select the option Exclude from Shipping Band Calculation box in the Details tab of the product, and ensure that the Shipping and Handling Supplement fields are blank. This will straight-away detach the product from the Shipping tables.

      Hope this helps.

Do you mean blank or set to zero? If you leave them blank Actinic automatically put zero in them. Also even with these items excluded from shipping band Actinic is still applying a postage charge.

This is quoted from the help section:

Note: If you set the location basis to 'Simple' you will not be able to use any of the shipping settings within the 'Details' tab of your products.

Assigning a Basic Shipping Charge to Each Product
Within the 'Details' tab of a product there is a checkbox labelled 'Exclude from Shipping Band Calculation'. If you select this box, then this product will not have a shipping charge worked out for it online.

This is a nice simple way of doing free shipping for a particular product.

Note: The 'Exclude from Shipping Band Calculation' checkbox has no effect if the 'Basis' for a shipping method is set to 'Value'.

Is this a contradiction. As it says you can't use details tab and then it tell you to do so to offer free shipping. Also what is shipping method set to value.

          I am confused

"Simple" shipping means you set one charge that is applied to all orders. All info entered anywhere is is overriden by this fee. Settings |Business settings |Shipping and handling.

If you do not choose "Simple" you can set up shipping by weight, order value, quantity etc, zones, classes and so on. The details in the product dialog box then come into play.

If you use zones, weights etc there is still an option to have a default weight.

So if you want to charge £3.95 for shipping except a few items, so you have to set up shipping by weight/zone and have something like weight 999 charge £3.95, then use checkbox labelled 'Exclude from Shipping Band Calculation'

Shipping then uses the default weight or sees the checkbox

That quote was from a page relating to the simple method. Here is the quote from the top:

              Basic Shipping Charges

Applying a Single Shipping Charge to an Order
Within the 'Configuration' tab in 'Business Settings | Shipping and Handling' you have an option to set the 'Location Basis' to 'Simple'.

If you do this, then you can use the 'Fixed Charge' field to enter a shipping charge to be applied to all orders regardless of what has been ordered and where the order will be sent.

If you want the online customer to be able to change this value then select 'Shopper Editable'.

It implies I can select simple but then exclude specific products. However, this does not work. Am I missing something?

that isn't how I read it.

the checkbox to exclude shipping charge is in the details tab, thus is ignored if you use 'Configuration' tab in 'Business Settings | Shipping and Handling'

What do they mean by the next line then

Assigning a Basic Shipping Charge to Each Product

This is what I was referring to as the contradiction. It doesn't say you need to select another option other than simple.

Jill I've done it now using your initial instructions but I do think the help instructions are wrong or misleading.

                    Thanks
