    Site Rip

    Hi,

I got a supplier who already uses actinic. However, they havent got the time to produce a Snapshot file of there site.

Is there away of ripping the site direct from the internet into actinic?

Really? Do they realise how quick it is to do a snapshot? Should only take 5 mins to create it. Or is it a possibility that they just don't want you to have it?

Either way, you can't just rip the site. You could copy and paste text, save images from their site etc but firstly, it will still be a long job and secondly, I would make sure you have permission to do this first.
    Cheers

The inability of doing this should be considered a strength of Actinic. You may be in charge of your back-office PC but the whole world can see what's on the server. If getting a working site from there was too easy we'd be at risk from site theft.

Tell your client that until they start making Snapshots, they'll have no way of rebuilding the site in case of hardware / system failure.

I don't know why they are playing the hard line.

All I've asked for is a simple import and that way im not getting all there data.

However, the supplier says if they done it for me then they would have to do it for everybody. They are happy for me to rip the content from there site though..... Problem is its a time consuming process especially on 2000 products...

I just wondered if there was a way of importing the contents.

I've already ripped the complete Actinic Site using HTTrack Website Copier.

Some clever use of a macro might get some parts of the raw html into excel - such as Iolo Macro Magic maybe. It's still going to be a slog.

They are probably trying to protect their investment. If you imported their product info as is and published it on your site then Google might see one of the sites as duplciated content.

We're asked this every 10 days or so, usually because someone has never bothered making any backups and their only Actinic system just got deleted / destroyed / stolen / burnt, etc.

Unfortunately the answer is always the same. All you can do is copy / paste text and image from each product on the live site one-by-one into a new copy of Actinic.

              Hi Norman,

I already new the answer just was hoping that there may be away.... ;-(

I think the only reason they aren’t giving it is purely they don’t understand the requirement....

As with the duplicate content in Google I don't think that’s the reason. Besides Google would go with the original content supplier on the rankings. I would try and make my pages unique anyway....

Oh well - looks like I'll have a big job in front of me... The annoying thing is I’ll have to do it all again in January when they produce a new site catalogue.

Presumably you want their product data so you can upload it your your site?

They are correct not to want to send you a snapshot as you will get their order info too (unless they go to Troubleshooting to create a support style snapshot)

So you should be asking them for a hierarchical export instead.
