    Strange rendering behaviour

    I’m totally mystified!

On my development machine, my laptop, the computers at the works, the Actinic pages render as they should.

The main page content appears to the right of the Products Menu at the left and the Best Sellers and New Products list get added to the bottom of the Products Menu. I have checked the design in IE7 & Firefox – all seems well…

However, one the directors, monitoring the development of the website on his laptop has a very strange rendering of the Actinic Pages

The Main Page Content is not at the top of the page at the right of the Product Menu… It appears as the Main Page Content has been added TO THE BOTTOM of the New Products/Best Sellers list.
(His resolution = 1024x768) I have tried other computers set at that resolution with no problems!

    Any idea any one?

If the design is a CSS design, this will happen if the size of the window that the site is being displayed in is too narrow. If he makes the window wider (or reduces the font size maybe) it should correct itself. You can test for this yourself by making your window quite narrow and seeing if it happens.

      Thanks for the reply Jo.
That was one of the first thing I thought of. I have tested by resizing my browser 600 pix wide - The Pages render as they should complete with a horizontal scroll bar

Just tried it in IE6 and it does indeed stick the main content underneath the left column

IE7 adheres to what you tell it to do, far better than what IE6 does. IE6 will just make something bigger if there is not enough space, whereas IE7 (not always) will squash things.

Have a play with the widths in IE6 to see what is affecting it, or maybe download IE7 for him when he's not looking

Stands a good chance it may be an image size doing it also.

Yeah, width related... adding "overflow: hidden;" to the left column (.page_body_content_left_column) makes the content appear in the correct place and cuts off some lines of "+++++++++++++++++++++++"

That must be it - I'm on IE7 & I believe he is on IE6.

What screen resolution did you view the page?

That said, The main width area is set to 580 pixels and as near as I can judge, the left column is 210 pix giving a total of 790 overall. His screen resolution is 1024 wide giving over 200 pix to play with... That indicates that it should not wrap!

The horizontal scroll bar does not kick in until I reduce the browser width to 789 pix.

                Hmmm!

Your left column is very narrow, i'd have a look into why there is so much space to the left of it and use that space better, will read far better and should solve your problem. Perhaps there are 2 widths in play, one for the header area and one for the main area, take a look into the main area width.

Sounds a good Idea to get him happy - but I must concider the lost orders for IE6 users

Sorry to join in on this issue but I am having this problem to. My mate phoned me from work today and told me about this on IE6. Is this quote the solution? Sorry but i didn't understand it. I have been messing with the Site Options and have got it looking good on IE7 but i don't know if this is messing up IE6.

                          I have
Width For Main Area - 570
Width of Section List - 140% (any less than this squashes the page up)
Width of Product List - 720
                          Template - Excecutive

I would appretiate some help with this because of the lost orders on IE6.

                          Thanks

                            Hi Tristam

                            Whats the url?

There must be something inherently wrong if you are having to force 140% width.
