8.5.1 offers to split program file and data, it dafaults to my docs if you don't specify a different location

I've seen a few friends systems in the last few days where the CPU is running at 100% all the time due to process svchost.exe looping. This seems to happen after the system has been on for a few minutes. Windows Update appears to be the culprit.

Disabling Automatic Updates (via Control Panel / Automatic Updates) seems to be the workaround at the moment. You'd then have to remember to periodically check for updates, however.

I was reading up on these processes all sitting in the background and apparently svchost should NEVER be running, i can recall at least 5 or 6 of these running on mine before the capitulation.

Most articles i read said to type in msconfig in cmd line and on the startup tab deselect everything in there and then as you find you need something, enable it again.

I've lost a laptop and desktop in 2 weeks. I originally thought i had a virus, but its now looking more and more like windows update is the problem.
