    Hosting Actinic V8.n.n with 1and1.co.uk

I have a client who already has a website with 1&1 - he wants me to register another domain name for him immediately and shortly create a v8 type site and also host it with 1&1...

I know that there are folk here hosted with 1&1 - I would appreciate their feedback on weather I should take the Linux server or Microsoft server route.

    Many thanks

So far, all is well. Am I still worried? YES! Watch some b.....d mess it up!

Most of us on 1&1 use the Linux version. It's easier and less hassle with actinic.

Make sure you go for the Business Package or higher otherwise you don't get perl.

No contest, Linux 100% of the time. In fact Linux or Unix every single time with Actinic, for ease of setup and an overall far smoother process.

windoz is fine as long as it is set up right. Of course our windows hosting is good for actinic - we have a few actinic sites on our windows servers, they upload as troiuble free as unix. although these clients usually want windows for other apps to. ie asp

having said that 95% of our actinic sites are hosted on unix.

          Thanks Mike & Lee
Linux it will be.... Thanks for the point about Perl

I am going to register the domain with a 'home' Package and upgrade to the business package when he is ready to go Actinic...

(His primary aim is to secure the web address now.)

You can get the domain name without any hosting, no need to get both if not wanted yet.

I wasn't actually trying, I saw they were already with 1&1 I was just correcting the fact that actinic does host on windows and sometimes people have a reason for wanting windows hosting.

And yes, there is no need to buy a hosting package just to get a domain name, there are plenty of registrars where you can buy domain name only. Go for someone like 123reg, easily etc where you get a CP so when the time comes you just point the name servers

To clarify my thoughts as i always seem to be corrected on something i have not said. YES Actinic will host on windows, i have one site myself on it, because ASP was also required. However, the vast majority of sites are on unix or linux.

Undoubtedly it is easier to use linux or unix as there are a large amount of threads with problems on windows, especially when fasthosts are involved. Only this week myself a client had bought a windows package and things such as permissions are a different ball game.

If you choose a host with proven windows actinic hosting, then yeah it's great, however if you take the safe option and want the least trouble and MOST help on the forum, you will find unix or linux is your best option 100% of the time.

                  To clarify:

Nothing mentioned about it doesn't host on windows, just that it is easier and smoother. If you need windows hosting, so be it, if you don't then steer clear IMO.

I wouldn't blame you if you did try - business is business!

None the less, thanks for your input too Jo - it has helped put my mind at rest that I am on the right track...

Please clarify a point _ cant seem to see it on the 1&1 website.

I take it that from the 2 options, the non MSHosting is Linux - maybe I need another pair of glasses..

I would recomend that the domain name is held by a seperate company like jo says 123reg or simular

This way should you fall out with your ISP or they fold etc, you just have to change the domain reg details and you are up and running

How many times do we hear of ISP's having problems and unable to contact them, if they control the domain name your Fxxxxd

I have recently been through just that with a company not playing ball. However, it is quite a simple process to overcome, because you can deal direct with the horse's mouth - Nominet in my clients case. As long as the domain is registered in your company name, you can deal directly with Nominet and by-pass anyone not playing ball, after all they are just a middle man in the process.

All you need to do is talk to Nominet and prove who you are, often by a letterhead. They will then do it all for you for.
