OK now I know that version 8 isn't even 12 months old, but are there any hints as to when version 9 is likely to be released?

I have been informed last week that we are looking at the end of this summer for version 9 release (it was a tentative comment but direct from within Act towers) and the dev team are currently concentrating on stability issues etc to offer a completely rounded & effective solution.
Time to plan the autumn updates?

However I would like to know why Actinic are releasing v9 before they address all the issues with v8 - why do we have to upgrade to get a stable product without all the V8 issues. For me v8 is still far from complete.
What are the new features in v9 that warrant a new product so close to the previous?

What I actually said to Daren is that we are moving to a roughly annual release strategy - i.e. similar to Sage's. That way, people with Actinic Cover should receive a major release upgrade within their subscription period.
Rather than dropping these massive releases on you every 18 months, which have huge amounts of functionality packed into them (which make it difficult to upgrade) we are going to make major releases a bit smaller, and much easier to upgrade between.

The "Enterprise" edition to fix MU and go over to Sql database?
All these improvements will also be included in the next major release we do (which will probably be called v9).

I don't envy Bruce T's job in trying to convince people to upgrade on an annual basis rather than every 24 - 30 months ..... just as Adobe, Microsoft, Corel etc seem to release thereby making the additional cost, functionality and learning curves worth the investment.

Seriously though, speaking as a store owner, we have a v7 site, heavily but well customised, that uses Actinics features well. Our upgrade, performed by a skilled designer, has been a quick road to despair.
The amount of man hours spent on it from a business point of view does now not equate with the benefits.
My advice is simple if your present v7 design is pretty much out of the box then great.
For anything more complicated, take a deep breath and ask yourself..What will it gain me and what will it cost me....there lies your answer.Donna

The main question to ask yourself when viewing the v8 updates is "is there anything new that will benefit my business, is critical to my store or increase any security measures?"
If the answer is no, then we do advise to stay put. Of course, the key in this instance is the major difference between v8 and all the previous carnations. Same brand name & product target but IMHO (and that of many others) they are totally different pieces of kit so upgrades from v4-v7 would be advisable and in the vast majority of cases, beneficial.

But the biggie, I think, is that v9 will be based on the same skeleton as v8 is, the template system being long gone by then, so therefore, I think most people, who update regularly, will be forced to upgrade sometime. Whether it be from v7 to v9 or whatever.

Ok will v9 Designer support v8 client sites?
If i upgrade to v9 as part of my cover agreement, will i then be forced to upgrade v8 client sites before undertaking any design work ie will my clients have to upgrade in order for me to do work for them.
Will there be an upgrade path for client software, as it is one of my clients has had to purchase client business at the same price as a new customer would, even though they had already bought catalog client - which is now worthless although in theory I should be able to sell it on.
I'm thnking of ditching client SW if there is no decent upgrade path.
