BestSellers in external file

The AUG cites a method (P78) for referencing the bestsellers list or new products list from an external file which is then brought into each page via a javascript include.

At what point is the external file populated with the products from the generation of the bestsellers etc?

I can't imagine that you have to manually generate the page given that this is a feature of the software...?

The code in the Advanced User Guide works by generating the best sellers code in a separate file, so that when your best sellers change, you don't end up having to upload every page.

This page will be generated whenever the best sellers list changes.

Thanks for this - maybe I've missed something here but the external file as specified didn't get created or populated by the bestsellers irrespective of whether I regenerated the BS list or published the site to the server.

Is there a specific piece of code that needs to be embedded into one of the layouts that does this?

If you follow the instructions in the AUG you'll get the file generating. Honest. If doesn't work in preview, but it appears when the store is online.

The code in the AUG just needs to be inserted where you want the best sellers list to be inserted. The code actually generates the list, as well as including it in the site design.

Just to clarify then - is it the process of checking the files before an upload etc that creates the content in the external file - or is it the generation from the marketing tab of the bestsellers list in the first place?

It's done when the Refresh or Update takes place. Also there's a condition so the file is only generated when the Search page is being created (to save a lot of repeated processing).
