Changing Web Host

Hi,

A warning to anyone hosting their Actinic shop with Fasthosts!

My Actinic shop is hosted by Fasthosts. Over time the shop has grown in size and complexity. The Fasthosts server is now returning an increasing number of CGI Timeout script errors. To cut a long story short, the Fasthosts shared web servers are all configured with a CGI timeout of 10 seconds. This is too short. I think Actinic recommend a setting of 30 seconds.

I have raised this with Fasthosts tech support and was told:

Unfortunatly we are not able to change this setting on the shared hosting servers.

I asked 'What are my alternatives?' and was told:

If you need a higher timeout for your CGI scripts than we can set on our shared servers then your best option is to move to a Dedicated Server where you will have full control over the system.

So be warned - Fasthosts Web Hosting is not suited to Actinic.

A Question: if I move to a different host will my google and other search engine rankings be affected?

No they won't as it is the URL that is indexed, not IP, server etc

I have just spoken to Malcolm on the phone and wanted to recommend Artisan if anyone is looking for a very knowledgable and helpful Actinic web hosting company. Blatent plug for him but he deserved it - thanks Malcolm
