    Streamline.net

I have just spent 48 hours trying to make Actinic Vs8 run on a streamline.net hosting account and SSL and failed! Streamline kept saying that their cgi-bin worked fine and Actinic's cgi files kept not executing! Actinic support and I tried every which way to no avail. We kept getting the following:

"Actinic received a server error from the web server. The CGI scripts are not executing properly on the server. Run Web | Configure Web Site Details... to review your web site configuration.

The test script failed to execute on the web server. The error could be caused by several things. Check the path to the Perl shell, the CGI script extension, the path to CGI-BIN, and the CGI-BIN URL. This error could also occur if your web site is out of disk space or your web server is not configured to accept POSTs to CGI scripts."

It looks like my only option is to bail out of streamline and take my client elsewhere. I have several other Actinic sites on different ISPs and several non Actinic sites on Streamline all with no problem. It has been putting the two together that has been a disaster!!!! Can any one, help or at least empaphise???

If you have sufficient access rights, delete and then re-create the cgi-bin folder if it's a Linux server - if it's windows, then the hosts need to do that.

Deleting and re-creating will hopefully resolve ownership/permission settings. If the problem is deeper - e.g. config errors in the server setup, these can only be caught by the server techs.

Hang in there Jonathan, we're all willing it to start working for you, chin up buddy.

Do you know of anyone else hosting an actinic store with them? It's probably a simple answer in that, they do not work with actinic. Choose a proven provider who is guaranteed to work with actinic and whose settings are already in the forum. Always get it working without the SSL first.

        Thanks Guys

This is the latest from Streamline, does it shed any light. They do seem to run their business for blaming the customer for any problems.

        <<Hi Jonathan Chappell,

        Thanks for your query.

We're well aware of people trying to dissuad people from using us for actinic, however it is fully supported.

With some of the scripts that you've uploaded there are inaccuracies in them which we've corrected. For instance they were in dos format, didn't include a shbag or the link to perl was wrong.

Download one of those files using your FTP software, open in Context (if you have it) or NotePad and check the path to perl in the first line. Copy that line into the Actinic Network Settings.

Hi, Our Site fxbathroomsdirect.com is on Streamline and working great. you will need to download a program called putty
            http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html
you then need to telnet to your web server and change the permissions on the cgi-bin

Thanks again for the input. Kevin's Putty seems an interesting one.
I am afraid I have rather given in and bought Actinic's shared SSL which surprisingly enough has worked instantly. It means I don't have to go through the hassle of moving ISPs. The Actinic is a little dear but is offset by Streamline's cheapness.

BTW by repeated banging on at Streamline about them blaming the customer rather than sorting the issues has led them to raise my ticket to Support Level 2. Watch this space!!!!

              Thanks again everybody.

My main issue with this lies in the fact they say their hosting is Actinic compatible. If it were then

a they would automatically create a cgi-bin for you with the correct permissions

b not accuse you of uploading scripts in DOS format, [assuming you were using Actinic to upload scripts, thus actinic takes care of this for you, and uploads correctly]

c Actinic support would probably be able to get it uploaded

Maybe Streamline could confirm if they have any Actinic sites running under SSL as both this thread and http://community.actinic.com/showthr...ght=streamline points to the fact that there may still be issues with SSL. Although there do seem to be sites that are running non SSL.

It isn't a huge drama if Streamline doesn't support Actinic and SSL, but if they don't they need to advertise the fact. There are several other big hosts who do not run Actinic under SSL - eg Webfusion and Fasthosts (windows). You just need to have this info before you try to signup/upload as there are time/frustration implications and extra time/cost of finding an alternative method of securing payments either with Actinic SSL or PSP .

                  Streamline.net

For most of this week i've been trying to upload an Actinic 'test' site on streamline.net - using the 30 day demo version of Actinic. (Linux Server & Linux SSL server).

Firstly i must say that their support is....well... err.... the most unhelpful i've ever come across! Their short - sometimes terse - repsonses leave little to be desired.. but that's another story.

I've set all permissions correctly on the cgi-bin & acatalog directories and still get the same error message as Graphicz. I've tried the basic settings with no SSL but have no joy..

I've just the past few moments uploaded a test cgi script - nothing to do with Actinic and STILL i get the darned "HTTP 405 - Resource not allowed
                  Internet Explorer "

Surely this has to ba an issue at their end?

I've just passed this back to them and will no doubt have to endure another 12-18 wait for a response....

I wouldn't mind but i subscribed to their The Bulk User (Reseller) Package .. and they have treated me like a piece of dog doo dah...

One of their repsonses to me was "We don't support 3rd party software" - despite the fact that if you google 'Actinic hosting' they turn up at number 1!

Anyway, the Actinic software looks great... hope i can get it up and running with streamline....

                  Ian

Well well well...... after my last post to Streamline stating that i'd used a simple cgi script as a test (which had failed) they replied saying that they had uploaded their own cgi script to 'prove' things worked...... now suddenly everything works fine.. well as far as no errors are concerned - but for some reason i don't have the rights to alter file permissions on the SSL server... oh well yet another ticket..

So basically folks... don't let Streamline fob you off with bullsh1t about it being Actinic's fault (as far as the original error was concerned).... i think there's a bug in their automated account creation procedure...probably resolved by manually deleting the cgi-bin directory and recreating it..

It took me 4 days to get them to 'fix' the problem but at least we got there.. i'd just like to punch the smarmy b'stard who's been responding to my tickets and basically accusing me of being a f#ckwit..(which i am really )

Anyway, though i'd post it just for info....

Useful info indeed Ian, and thanks.

It is very useful for this forum for people to post their experiences of hosts and the solutions.
