paypal website payment option .. session timing out immediately

Had a call from a customer (brand new site, v8.5.1. multisite) to say he was having difficulty using paypal to pay for a product. He was going through the checkpout, going over to paypal to make the payment and as soon as he hit 'pay' within paypal it told him his session had timed out .. after a handful of seconds. (this is using standard paypal website payment .. not pro)

I just did a test purchase and the same thing happened.

In order to sort the customer out I used the paypal interface to 'request funds' and his payment came through perfectly... no timing out.

I just checked paypal f.a.q. to see if this was something common .. and they seem to suggest that a timeout would only usually occur after 5 minutes of inactivity - neither the customer nor I spent anywhere near that length of time.

    Any ideas?

um .. I haven't changed anything much as you can see it's pretty much a standard templated site.

would it be worth refreshing the site?

I would compact the db first then refresh and see if that blows the cobwebs away...
