    How *should* this work?

My shipping is set by weight (for flexibility) although I actually charge "per item"
All of my products have a default weight of 1kg.

I have some products available in a choice of size and colour so I have hidden products with main products (components etc etc with associated products for "stock control")

I have the default 1kg weight allocated to the associated (hidden) product and the main product has a weight of ZERO manually input into its weight field.

This is mostly because not all of my associated products ARE hidden. Some are listed products in size sections (so available to order as the single size item) with a main product offering ALL the size choices in a different (ie nightwear) section.
This is the reason why the main products are zero weight as opposed to giving the main one the default 1kg

In V8.5.1, I have a problem with duplicates of these main products.

Ordering the main products works fine. Charges one "unit" for the item.
Ordering a duplicate charges "double" when you first add it to the cart.
Then, clicking on "view cart" it reverts back to its correct charge.

I'd initially got around it by changing the hidden products to zero weight and adding the default weight to the main product but I obviously couldn't do that for the associated products that weren't hidden so I still have a number of items on site that were doing this.

The way round it that HAS worked, site-wide...is checking the "exclude from shipping band calculation" box for every main product (and so their duplicates)

I shouldn't need to do this, should I? As they already have a manually entered weight of 0 (zero) anyway and shouldn't be counted.

So, my point is, is this a bug?
Or should I have to exclude every main product and not set its weight to 0?
    It always worked in V7
(I'm just glad I "fixed" it!)

    Tracey,

Just to update you, this is being looked at by development and a response should be posted here.

Have you tried compacting your shipping Database recently?

    Kind regards,

      ok, thanks Bruce.
To be honest, I encounter that many niggles that I compact the databases (both) at least once a day (although usually the niggles in question are me being dim but compacting has become a habit!)
I'll watch this space for any further news then.
Like I said, it's easily work-roundable, I'm just not sure it should need to be.
      Cheers

        Hi Tracey

The 'Exclude from shipping band calculator' setting on the product should
be applied to all of it's duplicates. When set the associated shipping
fields (Weight, Category, Alternative Weight and Quantity are all disabled
        -> ignored).

The settings on the main product are not replicated
automatically to the duplicates so although the duplicate UI may say it
has 'Exclude from shipping band calculator' set in fact in the DB the
field is not set. Use the Reset Duplicates button on the main product to
replicate the changes to the product shipping details whenever they are
        changed. This is the Bug.

This does mean however that it should not be possible to have a different
shipping arrangement for duplicates from the main product.

I hope this answers your query.

        Thanks

it's not the "exclude from shipping calculation" that isn't working though..it's the zero weight (which should effectively mean the same)

And it's only on the initial cart confirmation..as refreshing the cart shows the correct result

It's all very weird..but at least i know there's a bug in there somewhere!
