    merging orders ..

Recently I was away from my main PC and took actinic with me on a laptop in order to make sure I could process orders whilst I was away.

This happened (though as you will see from my other threads things are not entirely tickity-boo with my store), but now I have orders on the laptop AND orders on the main PC.. is there a way of copying the laptop's records (orders only) over to the original PC and merging them so I only have one set of records at any one time (so things don't get even more confusing than normal)

Yes this is easy peasy in v8.

    File Menu Import orders.

This feature will import orders from your designated MDB fie (the one from laptop) into the PC.

    1 Take backup snapshots.
2 copy latest mdb from laptop to PC save it somewhere safe
    3 open actinic on PC
4 file menu, import orders, browse to saved MDB
    5 import

This will add the orders from the laptop to the orders on the PC

That will not merge orders, it will overwrite orders. I don't know of an easy way to merge orders from two different Actinic installations.

          Woops, sorry.

Just as well I included step 1.

What Jan is saying is the import will always overwrite current orders rather than append.

Although in my book I would have though append should have been quite easy to program so I don't know why it isn't.

Maybe just another example of real world developer expectation versus actinic developer WAD.

                or as the AUG states:

Use one PC for updates and the other for orders,

in saying that, I have a few orders on two pc's so I'll just shut up I think!.....

It's not easy to append orders, it is actually quite a hard thing to do.

just as well I didn't yet get around to doing it then.

I can get around this this time and perhaps this then is one for a wish list ..

At least we'll know in future, but I would think it would be a handy thing to merge order data in the way I outlined ... I doubt it'll be the last time me and my laptop potter away from the office and still need to access and download orders (and though my children think I am quite special .. well the oldest is 5 and now starting to wise up perhaps .. I doubt I'm unique in this situation!)

I can assure you the Import Orders will overwrite what you have in your order file

I know, I just bloomin' done it - and it wipes over all that you have, lovely!

Yes Jo, it is easy to misjudge the scale of a change in that situation.

Actually, this is one for the wishlist. As in import an order into an existing order. (as in add the items to it, not replace them)
