Can anyone advise me if it is possible to have actinic use .PHP files instead of .HTM files?

Yes it is possible to have the Actinic pages use .php pages rather then .html. Please take a look at this Thread as well as "Creating PHP Functions" topic in the Actinic Advanced users Guide .
