EEK! My Homepage has gone wobbly!!!

    Hi,
As a complete technophobe I'm struggling to get my website working. It's been designed for me by a design agency but unfortunately now I've got my sticky mits on it I've already wreaked havoc. Somehow the homepage has got completely muddled with the menu bar appearing horizontally under my logo instead of vertically and the pictures getting stuck in a corner and all the nice fonts and text colours that the designer used have disappeared and it all looks a mess! Weirdly when I look at the homepage from the content tree and click the design tab it looks how it's supposed to but it doesn;t look like that when you browse it on the web. I would be really grateful if anyone could spare 5 mins to take a look and tell me how to put it right.
The URL is www.toosmallforschool.co.uk - it's only the home page that's affected - everything else looks like it's supposed to. To see the homepage as it should be go to www.toosmallforschool.co.uk/test.html

Thank you in advance to anyone who feels sorry enough for me to help.

Is your home page uploaded by Actinic or do you manage it by yourself?

The problem is you are missing 'acatalog' from this line:-

    <link href="actinic.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /><style type="text/css">

    it should read:-

    <link href="acatalog/actinic.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /><style type="text/css">

If you tell us how it is managed we can easily advise you how to fix it! If it is managed by Actinic check that this line hasn't been amended in your template:-

    <link href="actinic.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

It should read exactly as above.

EEK! My Homepage has gone all wobbly

      Hi Dave
sadly, I am incompetently attempting to manage it myself. I imported the snapshot the design guys sent me last night and it all looked fine (although the shopping cart doesn't work at all!!) but in fiddling with something today I've sent the homepage on the web bonkers.
Can I fix it in actinic?? Where do I need to go to enter the text you've given me?

PS you don't know how grateful I am that someone has actually replied!

Whoops - just realised you meant is the site uploaded through Actinic - yes it is - and it's the Actinic software I'm trying to incompetently manage. You see how phobic I am?!!!

          Rachel,

Not a problem, we all start somewhere. If you click on the design tab and click somewhere on the page preview (preferably somewhere near the top) you should see your main template appear below in the 'Layout Code' box. On the assumtion you have the correct template up you should be able to see a line near the top of the code reading something along the lines of:-

          <link href="actinic.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

If it is any different from what you see above, change it to the above and do an upload and see if this helps. If not, post back and we can take it from there.
          Cheers

It looks like the site has not fully uploaded - go to web | refresh and refresh the website.

To be honest you should be talking to the people who designed the site for you.

Malcolm may well be right, looking at it closer you can't add anything to the cart either.

As Malcolm says, do a full refresh on the site first and see if that cures any of the problems.
              Cheers

EEK! My Homepage has gone all wobbly

Have just checked the code in the layout text and it's exactly the same as you've given me David. What to do? It did look OK this morning so I've obviously buggered somehting up but have no clue what. Is there a reason that it looks OK on the page preview but messed up on the web?

I have tried refreshing several times but it always gets stuck on sending the files. Unfortunately the people that designed the site are inexperienced in e-commerce too (they're friends who did it for mates rates - it's so true about not working with friends...) this is the first e-commerce site they've done so I thought there would be more knowledge available on the forum.

You say it gets stuck sending files so this is probably the problem. If you give us some more info we maybe able to help.

Where does it get stuck? Any error message?
                  Cheers

There is - but its very difficult to work out what they have done from this end - especially if as you say they dont know actinic.

I would try contacting a designer who could look at your snapshot and see what is wrong with it. As it looks like the css is not attached to the brouchure pages and your cgi scripts are not working which could be a hosting problem as well. Try a network test and see if the host is responding.

EEK! My Homepage has gone all wobbly

The homepage is back!! I tried to run a refresh again and this time it worked but a pop-up box came up saying the brochure homepage will be overwritten - I remember this come up before (had forgotten about it) and I clicked yes .. and that's when the problem started. Clicked no this time and the homepage looks lovely again. Shopping cart is still completely buggered though. It did work on the test site they were working on. I will try and find a designer who knows Actinic to see if they can work out what's happened and why the cart won't work.

Thanks both very much for trying to help a desperate woman.

Oh meant to say .. another popup box came up saying there were 480 coding errors .. they all seem to relate to 'product ID being used in wrong context' Could this be the problem with the cart?? Do I need to get the designer to rewrite it?

I would re - import the snapshot your design agency sent you and start again. Then get yourself a couple of hours of training.

A couple of hours of training will save you weeks of messing this up.

                          Nice site though

                            Hi Jo,

I've already tried reimporting the snapshot but it hasn't made any difference to the fact that the cart doesn't work. I think I'll have to send Actinic support a snapshot and see if they can figure out what the probelm is.

Scarily I've already been on the running your Actinic Store course - it all seemed quite easy in the classroom but it concentrated on the basics and doesn't really prepare you for when it all goes pear-shaped. I wish I'd got into computers years ago instead of marketing!!

                            Thanks once again

                            Rachel

Unless your friends have trashed the site Rachel, it's most likely to be a hosting problem IMO. Press the test button in network settings and see what it tells you for starters.
