How are search results ordered?

Does anyone know how search results are ordered? I've looked on a few sites but can't see any pattern - are they displayed in the order they were added to the database perhaps?

Does anyone know of any ways to re-order the search results, for example by product type / category?

I believe they are ordered by product code 1-9, A-Z. And I'm pretty sure there is no other way to order them, although it is on the wish list forum.
