Have got 5 sections in left sidebar with subsections shown.
Want to leave it like this except for 1 section shop by brand which would like to put as a drop down.
Does anyone know if this is possible

If you duplicated your catalog and remove all the sections you want to leave as is, then you can create a DDM for the chosen one.

So in short, yes, it is possible.
