New products in a box on home page

Using smart theme and trying to get new products in a box into the main part of page in the same style as appears in sidebar when use mini new product layout?

Have you tried the various settings you are offered in site options? There are specific sections for best sellers and new products. Both of which have a 'home page' location as an option.

Yes but doesnt put it into homepage in the nice clean box style that it does in the sidebar

It does on mine. Select your home page so it is on screen, then go into the site options and have a play, if you click apply if you change anything, you will see the change underneath, so don't have to keep coming in and out to try.

gone through site options. doesnt seem to be a choice for home page new products list in a box.

when you're selecting your layout..make sure you have the "used fixed layout" box checked.
This should allow you to select the "Home page" layouts
