upgrading to v8

I have just upgraded www.miffyshop.co.uk to v8.

NB the live version is v7.

two problems.

I have graphic images for the header: Home, Checkout, Contact Us etc...

V8 has replaced these with text, text in blue so these links have become invisible, so I am desperate to remedy this w/o which I cannot put the v8 version live.

v8 has added back in the coupon code 'Enter your coupon code' etc at the bottom of the shop. OK now |I am being thick, but I know v8 does not have Advanced editing, but should I edit my alt_primary in dreamweaver.

apologies if these are easy questions, I have used actinic and google search to find existing answers and I have read the Advanced Users Guide, but I can't find the answer.

Sally,

First, you will need to copy your images from the v7 site folder into the v8 site folder, and then look at changing the layout from text links to image liks.

You no longer have an alt_primary.

With v8, you change to the dsign tab, and click an item in the top preview window, to see the associated code appear in the Layout Code window below.

if you have v8 Multi-Site, then it would be best to experiment with the original Actinic site data that is installed when you 'licence a new site'.

As your V7 site is customised the upgrader will struggle - in this situation the general advice is to start again in V8 and rebuild the outer layout. Not what you want to hear but its quicker in the long run

OK thanks for these tips.

Fortunately I had to buy a new computer to upgrade to v8. So I am programming the v8 version on one computer and 'running the shop' on another.

I guess the answer is to rebuilt the site then add in the extra orders, we get quite a few, at all hours at day and night, the adding in the extra orders sounds easy from the advanced users guide.

I will now park this and start again when I have 10 hours or more to do it properly.

Realistically (and i am not trying to be difficult here) you might need 10 days not hours

Hold on a second.. I have 200 products in the Miffy shop, are you saying I have to re-enter all of this information.

I think what jo is refering to is that it will take you more than 10hr just to learn how to use V8 never mind do a design as its completely different to V7

Yes, i was referring to the upgrade path, to either upgrade v7 templates or redo a design in 8 will take days not hours.

you can upgrade the v7 snapshot thus bring in products, its all the rest that needs to be done and tested thoroughly before replacing a live site.

That's why I need V8 to keep my US customers happy.

Also there is always a faint hint of surprise on the help desk when I say: 'No I am running v7...'

I guess it will take me ten days to upgrade my five actinic shops to v8, I am just hoping it is 91/2 days for the first one and 30 min each for the consequetive ones.

Each upgrade i have done has taken the same amount of time or more, rarely less and never 30 mins LOL I'm going to lie down now and chuckle .

Or someone who is doing thier first V8 upgrade. With sites as complex as you have I would plan on a couple of weeks per site after you have mastered V8.

Keep us posted!! and remember V8 is nearly a year old and most things have been answered already so use that search

I have to know how it works, I think what most alarms me is I am a bit of a whizz at v7 and I am not clear why v8 is so different.

I tend to get a lot of help from the help desk, as a have a developer subscription that gives you very good help.
