    Shared SSL intermittent problems

Hi there, I hope i am posting this in the right forum as i dont want to be spanked!

I currently am running Catalog 8.5.1 hosted on a standard shared hosting package with good old easy space, further more I have a shared SSL cert with easyspace also.

I have some customers saying that they are unable to move to the payment page once they have entered the personal details, this though does not happen all the time.

I ask what browser they are using and it is usually variants of IE, I have IE and FF on my machine and often do test purchases to check its working and only once have I encountered this problem. 2nd level support at easyspace are currently looking into this now.

I suppose my main questions are has anyone ever come across this type of problem and also should i do something about upgrading my hosting? I have spoken at length with different members of support at Easyspace who all say the package I am on is sufficient for actinic, but, i am awfully tempted to push the boat out and go for a Virtual Dedicated Server and then install my own SSL on it without purchasing a £200 from easyspace.

When i first set the site up it was on a budget, but now this site is turning out to be our bread and butter and I cannot help thinking that these intermittent problems are loosing me money and that i need to now get serious about how i host the site and look at SSL, payment processors etc as its no longer a hobby but my living.

I would be interested in any comments as this issue is beginning to frustrate me to the point of being a dribbling wreck sat in front of a computer.!

    Many thanks in advance

IMO a PSP is the way to go - I have had problems with sites on easyspace SSL before and in the end my clients moved

I too never touch an ISPs shared SSL.

Either use Actinic's shared SSL or buy your own SSL. Sometimes the later does require a change of host.

Although in the long run PSP is really the way to go, BUT some people also use SSL with PSP so my above comment stands

= PSP- see actinic help files, do a search or see the actinic website for more details

PSP - payment solution provider ie worldpay, protx, secpay, ppp, hsbc

ie CC are processed by a 3rd party, you never see/download CC detail which is better for customer security

Ah sorry, having a thick moment!

Currently filling out the details to go streamline and then will probably go Protx.

              Thanks for the comments

I'm one of those people who will not buy from a small business who doesn't use a PSP as i don't know what you have in place to ensure security of my CC detail.

How do i know you don't download orders to a laptop that then gets stolen? or your PC is shared by the family and thus the kids can access my detail? This is not a personal attack just my feelings about small business websites.

BTW your Terms link doesn't work

I wanted to check out your terms page to tell me about your CC security

                    Hi Lloyd,

I too was having problems with shared SSL, even though my v7 site functioned perfectly. My problem was solved by taking out a dedicated SSL certificate.

                      Hi Remmo

I am rapidly coming to this conclusion, just working out the best route to take, faced with two options
                      1) Upgrade my easyspace hosting to a Virtual Dedicated Server and then install a SSL from a 3rd party as easyspace charge the earth for them

                      2) Move hosts to someone like United Hosts who charge roughly a quarter of the cost at Easyspace and the hosting is cheaper too!

The shared SSL route isnt ideal for actinic, if only i had realised this when paying £50 for a shared solution, it even impacts on PayPal Pro which has also been a major headache for me as that apparently works best with a dedicated SSL as opposed to a shared one.

More money!! Yippeee... but this is my online business and im not paying the rent for a shop so I need to be prepared to invest money in making it right!

                        Hi Lloyd,

Let me know if you choose to go along the VServer route with us - I'll arrange a refund on the Shared SSL against the VServer cost.

                        Thanks
