splitting lists

Hi

I would like to be able to split brochure pages and possibly also catalog section pages into separate categories, and use this categorisation to filter pages through multiple brochure (and poss top level section) lists.

Ideally there will be three classes of brochure page:

1. displayed in top nav bar via a brochure list (filtered)
2. displayed in footer bar via another brochure list (filtered)
3. not in a list, just manual links to the page

Similarly two classes of section or product

1. in main left hand nav
2. displayed as text only content (news etc) in outer layout rhs all pages

I'm sure this must be possible now with variables and conditionals, was wondering whether anybody has had a bash?

I was having another look at this, and hoping to do it with Content Categories, but I cannot find ContentCategory or similar as a variable.
