SSL redirect (http to https)

I have an existing website that i am making secure with ssl.

I have existing inbound links to this site.

Is there a way of automatically redirecting an inbound link to its new secure link.

ie

inbound link http://mywebsite/test.html

automatically redirecting to

https://mywebsite/test.html

first question has to be why are you securing the whole site and not just the checkout?

its only the checkout that needs securing and if you choose this route you will negate the need for re-directs

Your site will be much quicker usually also, as SSL can slow down a site considerably if used across all pages.

Are there not caching issues with https pages also?

I am using the same hosts as this poster, this is a reply he got from avtinic support.

first is that you have to have the whole site running under SSL or not at all, the "Checkout and Login" pages only setting does not work. This email quote is from a very helpfull chap at actinic when i was trying to set it up using the afore mentioned method

"However the problem that you see with the SSL settings is somewhat harder to resolve.

The problem is that the both the normal and secure URLs must point to the same directory i.e. : -

http://www.yourdomain.com/acatalog/

and

https://www.yourdomain.com/acatalog/

must both point to the acatalog directory at: -

httpdocs/acatalog/

in the same way that both the normal and secure URLs for the CGI-BIN point to the same directory.

Unfortunately this is a showstopper, the SSL side of the software will not work unless this condition is met.

Having said that, this only refers to when the software is running with SSL 'on checkout and customer login only', if the whole site is run under SSL, you can upload everything to the httpsdocs directory and it will operate.

I would think the SSL has been set up incorrectly on the server or you are using a very peculiar host (who are you using?)..... if you look at any Actinic site featured on this forum it will take a month of Sundays (if not longer) to find a site that runs wholly on https... everyone that I can think of and have visited only has security on the cart areas where it is needed.

Being honest, i did not try the ssl only on the checkout, just selected the whole site according to the post above.

I have just tried it and it seems to work fine. SSL only in the checkout.

Any ideas what i am doing differently

Could be a number of things different with the server or the Actinic support email is only specific to that particular set of circumstances (or wrong).

So long as you have it working that is the main thing.
