Section link layout won't change AAAHHH

I love V8 but it's like blood from a stone sometimes.
Have many sub sections, most of which respond to the change of layout.
I click the sub section, edit the layout tab/Sections and change the Section Link Layout to "Section Name Only Section Link" - just like my other sub sections but guess what - no change.
It continues to use the section image form the main section if that makes sense.
I have tried changing the variable in the design tree but it's having none of it.
Any ideas, I really need to get this sorted.....

In frustration I have changed each subsection to use the shim.gif which on its own is invisible therefore acheiving desired result. not perfect but it works
