    Adding a variable

Not sure if i've got the hang of this or not but here goes !.
i want to show the RRP and a "discount" price of the product page.

I understand that i can create a custom variable... so
I've created discountprice in design library/variables/product

I've set the place of setting to product

I'm expecting then, to see a little box, when I am in product set up that I can enter this new price in.....

Have I got the wrong end of the stick about being able to add my own fields like this ?

    Thanks
    Nige

By default user variable usually go onto the products "properties" tab unless you have specified another place. Did you enter a prompt when setting the variable up?

      Hi jont

Ah.. ok, working now .... almost !
When I set the tab name to general, then i can see the variable i've created in the pull down list at the bottom which also contains retail price desc, your price desc etc etc.
in fact i can see it in every tab i put it in except for details.
Which was the tab i originally put it in.
for some strange reason all i see in details is a sort of blue thick line but nothing else..
If i move it to some other tab, then the thick blue line disappears from details.
Looks like something aint quite right but i'll go with what i've got.

Presumably its not too difficult to then get it to display on the actual product layout.
I'll nose about and have a read up before begging for help :-)

Thanks for the help so far, much appreciated.

To insert the variable switch to design tab mode .. click where you want the code to appear and either start typing the name and then select it from the drop down.. or click on the blue "insert variable" and your can search and insert there.

All variables are best added to the properties tab. Don't know why but they always work from that tab.

          Ha !
Superb. I thought that adding " RRP is xxx " would be difficult.
I assumed that i had to put quotes around the text, but no...
This is going too well... something bad is going to happen :-)

          Thanks again, a great help.

          Cheers Nige

This has all kind of blown right over my head but seems to do exactly what i want to do which is simply to display a manufacturers RRP, our price saving amount and percentage.

Ideally i was hoping to simply set up discounts per product group so i could control things easier but i don't seem to be able to display the discounted price and the customers simply get the discount once they get to the checkout .

Basically i would like display the products RRP, Our discounted price and ideally what the discount amount and percentage is (same as the big boys such as play.com etc do).

EG: Our Price: £90.00 RRP: £99.99 You Save £9.99 (10%)

I have created a product with the price set as 85.10 (+ vat £99.99) and i have then setup a 10% discount for the product group but all this does is give them discount at the checkout and doesn't display the prices and savings info so i then tried to setup different custormer groups called RRP and Our Price but this didn't work either as i appear to have the customers to the groups manually.

Can anyone explain if it is possible and if so how please?

                Hi,

Dont know if this is the right way to do it or not but I acheived this by adding to new variables at product level. One being "wasprice" and the other "percentageoff".

Then when I diso a product I change the price of the product to the discounted price and enter the old price into the wasprice variable for the product and the percentage discount in the percentageoff variable.

I then inserted the wasprice variable into the layout for the section page allowing the user to see the was and new price. You can see this here:

                http://www.designtoplease.co.uk/acat..._Off_Sale.html

I then entered the wasprice and percentageoff variables into the the product page layout to appear like so:

                http://www.designtoplease.co.uk/acat...hone_info.html

This method does mean that you have to manually enter was prices and percantage discounts to the products - not sure if there is a more automated way of doing this as have not had time to look into it more yet.

The end result in your example is just what i am looking for. I've had a play with what i think you suggested and added the variables for the 3 extra fields but there not exactly the easiest things in the world to then use especially if you have say 2000+ products:

                  Here's a pic of what i get:

Here's a pic of what be more ideal:

                  Is something like this possible?

It does actually strike me that all the required info is basically available by simply creating discounts. For example if i set up a 15% off discount Actinic somewhere knows the percentage and it knows the RRP and Discounted Price (Our online price) and can surely calculate the difference between the RRP and our discounted price so i would think/hope that there is a much easier solution for displaying the pricing details (RRP: Our Price: Saving Amount: Discount Percentage: within the product details) using the discounts tab, any ideas anyone?

                    Hi,

The images you have included in your post are not showing - maybe try adding them as an attachment to the post so I can see.

Agreed this way is a little more long winded and would be better to have something along your lines - I haven't had time to look into doing that way but will try and have a look tonight.

You can speed up the process by importing via a csv - You will need to make sure you have set your variables to be uploadable to do this. if you want to try it this way i would suggest taking a snapshot before you do anything in case there are any issues when you upload.

Next export your site as a csv. when you open the csv if you scroll along to the right (on the product header line) you should see your new variables. You can then assign your variables here. You can use formulas in excel to automatically calculate the values you need for the sale price and percentage off and then copy the was prices into your wasprice column and the discounted prices can go in the product price column. If you choose to do it this way and you have tax in your prices remember you sale price will have to adjusted to show the ex vat value and also be in the correct format eg 1995 for £19.99. Then import the csv which should populate your products with the data you require.

I will let you know if i manage to get anything working using the discount options that you have suggested.

                    Regards

                      Sorry fixed the images :-)

My concern is by having the variables per product is that say for example you stock a range of 40 products from a single manufacturer which would be in a single group you would need to calculate and change all the variables for all 40 products should that manufacturer have a price increase but if you could do my ideal of simply displaying the data accoridng to discount settings for product groups you would only need change the percentage and all the products details would be updated accordingly although of course you would still need to increase the RRP of each product the job would still take substantially less time and effort.
