Speed of content updates in version 8

I am in the process of upgrading from 6.1.5, and have noticed if I make a change to the content in 8.1.5 it its quiet slow to apply the setting. Is this because my content has been converted over from a 6.1.5 snapshot, or is it because version 8.1.5 uses much more resources?
