Hide it behind a new index.html file and redirect all entries via .htaccess (302 temp redirect).

You can then work merrily on your site locally, upload and then remove the htaccess restrictions etc.

I not that clever, is there an easy way? just to stop people ordering?

Yeah just suspend ordering and then update the site. It will take the add to cart button away and block any sales.

As Lee states, just suspend and switch to text mode.

But from your original post, I was under the impression you did not want anyone to see your work in progress?

OK simple way...

back up everything locally, delete everything online via ftp, create a new index.html saying UNDER BUILD or something and off you pop....(you may also want to build a 404 custom page too)
