    Member discount using membership numbers

I work for a membership organisation. We'd like to offer 2 groups of our members discounts on our products:

All members 10% discount on certain items.

Pro members 10% discount on pro items – rest of members excluded.

I'd like them to be able to use their membership numbers (which they're given when they join) as the (coupon?) code that activates the discount and identifies them as a member and whichever type of member they are?

Is this possible, and if so, can anyone suggest a method of doing it?

    Thanks very much!

If the two membership types have different prefixes that are common within the type

    e.g MEM96003 | PRO94003

Then you could set a discount (coupon) code up for MEM9 to give 10% discount and one for PRO9, also to give 10% discount.

Group the ordinary products into one group, and apply the MEM9 discount to that group only.
Group the pro items into one group, apply the PRO9 discount to both groups.

Add a new input box to the site where user types their full membership number, use javascript to copy the lefmost (four?) common characters into a hidden coupon code field.
