    Actinic is loading... forever

Recently, Actinic has started taking forever to load. I downloaded the most recent upgrade for 8.5.1 from actinic.com earlier this week. I've been waiting about 30 minutes for it to load this last time. It just sits on the "Actinic is loading..." splash screen. If I let it sit all night, it eventually comes up. The Catalog.exe process is not using any CPU currently, and is using 41.8mb of memory. Nothing else is using CPU time on the machine. The problem seems to have started sometime after one of my more recent software upgrade.

Any suggestions on how to see what the deal is? I have about 5500 products loaded, mostly clothing, with the majority of the products having multiple permutations. I have 6 main sections, each having 1 - 10 sub sections. The machine is a core 2 duo laptop with 512mb of memory. I also use Actinic link for POS. ActinicCatalog.mdb is still in Office 2000 format, as I only have Office 2007 and can't upgrade it to Office 2003 format. It is 19mb. It has been optimized recently.

When you get in, try and compact again and turn off the preview pane. Then close Actinic and see if it is any quicker. This will show if it is due to code and previewing or database loading.

How does it compare with your previous version? What was your previous version?

Tried what you recommended, and still having issues. I never had issues like these with the previous version, which was 8.something-HERA if I remember correctly.

I just let it try to open for 10 minutes before killing the process. Just noticed that somehow the ActinicCatalog.mdb file is now 475mb. Compacted with Access 2007 and it is down to 20mb. Actinic now crashes when I try to run it, citing ntdll.dll as the problem. After rebooting the system and logging in, Actinic automatically launches, and has now been trying to run for 20 minutes.

This is totally and utterly frustrating. Any other suggestions?

      Thanks,

      Chris

try totally going over your system with various cleaner tools.

        ad-aware
        ccleaner
        antivir
        spybot s&d

that dll sometimes crashes when you load explorer with conflicting third party extensions.

try going to the advanced settings in internet explorer and turning off third party plugins.

        re-install internet explorer.

re-install dcom and the data access components.

Am sure a recent Windows update has shafted things a touch. Actinic's been behaving similarly for me out of the blue for about 3 weeks now. Have to head to Task Manager, close the instance of Catalog.exe, and rerun everytime I want to open the software. There's also been issues with Mailwasher Pro and Windows Live Messenger that all seem to be linked to whatever's causing the issue, as when one of these 3 pieces of software appears to go a bit wonky, the rest all stall also... but all other software on the system operates fine.

A further issue which has arisen at the same time... head to a product with lots of components or permutations... delete a permutation then roll the mouse scroll wheel... you'll find the Content tree blanks out the branch you were working on at the time. You have to wait for eggtimer to stop and preview window to update before you touch anything else in the content tree to avoid this.

I now work with the PagePreview window permanently closed. If I want to see the page I'm working on, I flip to the design tab.
          Cheers!

I had a similar issue earlier this week both at work and a home. However in the dead of night last night it wizzed up no problem from home. Put it down to excessive BTOpenworld engineers rumbling about town, they were everywhere earlier in the week, suspect Some Major Problem and slow ISP connections with low bandwidth availability

I totally uninstalled actinic and actiniclink for pos, then deleted the actinic v8 directory. I reinstalled the HFUA version from scratch, and it is still crashing on launch.

I can't find any other issues on the machine, and everything else seems to be running just fine. Any other ideas?

Just upgraded to HFUA on my main machine running Designer, and it has now been opening for 20 minutes. Gotta be a bug in HFUA...

did you try the things i suggested?

and re-installed the things i suggested?

try opening your db in access and compacting again after the re-install of the components responsible for data, not just actinic.

worst comes to worst, re install windows.

or download vmware and install xp in that and then install actinic into that to see if its a problem with your xp somewhere

I've just experienced the same problem over the last few hours. I've just turned off the 'Manage Stock Level in Actinic EPOS' and this seems to have fixed it.

Bit of a bummer really as I intend to use this option over the coming months
