V8 on Ubuntu by using WINE

when vista comes out it give me an incentive to move over to linux, out of those variety i found Ubuntu is the best windows alternative, only takes me a couple of hours all ups and running - including Internet access and all email stuffs. could have create a web server to host my own site, then again don't wanted to push my luck

now i have install a 'crossover' namely WINE. see http://www.winehq.org/

surprisingly i can install actinic on Ubuntu, and so far with trial version v8 it is all singing and dancing!! am i dreaming?!

does anyone have a similar experience?? is there any patches i need to apply before it goes crashed on me?

No but i hope you keep us updated with progress, I've got a backup Dell Lattitude with Ubuntu on it, I've never tried to put WINE/Actinic on it.

Maybe I'll try now, as it is my dream to ditch MS completely

I want to try this as I have Ubuntu in a VM, but will WINE 0.9.12 work on Ubuntu 7.0.4, it only mentions 5.10 and 6.06?
What versions are you using Vincent?

Similarly I have been using Actinic 7X thru 8.5.1 in Parallels on an iMac OSX and it works absolutely fine.

Did you need to install any extra's to get it to run? I want to move away from MS and PC but actinic compatibility (as I heard) is the only thing stopping me.

For the experience i had with "VM" it always added unpredicted issue and it is just unstable for me. i have tried VM and prefer "dual boot", VM is memory hungry for a normal performance - that is my opinion. if i get this WINE solution going i love to stay away completely with MS same as Pinbrook

version 6.06 is a stable version with LTS (long term supports) from ubuntu community and this is the version i am using. i don't think it is necessary to use the latest because you can customise what you needs (it is the nature of linux) and upgrade the required module for WINE. i believe most of the ubuntu server are still on version 6.06

i am starting to test one of the variety of ubuntu - it called kubuntu it use KDE desktop interface which i believe it is the closest match to windows xp. combining with Synaptic (graphical package management) it look after the systems very well, particular dependencies file on special package like WINE.

if i have time over this bank holiday i will try to get it finished and report any issues

my objective is trying to get away from those big corporation - for me Apple iMac just like another Microsoft - sorry

nevertheless i reckon for "usability" factor iMac is pretty good. an iMac can do all PC and linux stuffs but not the other way round.

                Nothing special Jonathan.

Have been using for over 12 months on OSX that gets the usual updates and Parallels that has been through one update.

Parallels (and a windoze license that came free with Office for iMac) is a cost but once you have it adds a new dimension.

I did try running Actinic under Bootcamp and it worked fine but whilst Bootcamp is a freebie it is a boot option so you loose the flexibility of running both Mac and windoze apps.

Of course with Parallels you have a powerful VM tool that will let you do many things.

I would add that this is only my PC @ home that I use for dev in the wee small hours but I have used it for test production and there have been no probs.

                  Fantastic.

Thanks Alistair. I'll try and get it running this weekend.

in some way or another, i'v had actinic running on anything, in several versions of wine, on multiple platforms.

i'v ran actinic on my xbox. under xdsl. no shit.

i'v ran every type of vm, including qemu, vmware virtual pc, paralels, on linux, windows, osx, amiga, beos and qnx.

                    why? becasue i'm broken inside.

if you need any help on any of the above, drop me an email...

Did you find any cheats or do they all say RTFM?

people usually compile doom for a new gadget.

i run the 'nic on it.

                          cheats? well:

                          u,d,l,r,a+start = profit booster.
towards, down, away, away, high kick = end of day finishing move.

and also, i got the the last level and killed the end boss of the internet, he was hard.

                              Snow
Just wondering why a white south african calls himself snow - is it to avoid confusion.

I'm assuming you are white as you have a sensible name (well jonathan is sensible, snow might not be). I collect daft names, during my last stay in SA I came across the following first names

robot, danger, wingnut, pretty and many more i've now forgotten
