    remote support

Although I intend this thread to be answered by people who design sites for clients I haven't posted it in the developer thread because I didn't want to exclude anyone from answering (the developer thread being closed.)

I have done a free trial for a remote support product which is BRILLIANT it means that you can login to a clients computer securely and on a one-off basis with the access being controlled by them in a transparent way so that they don't have issues regarding giving you access to their machines.

    log me in rescue

at the end of the trial they asked for feedback and I am going to send them the following email:

    Hi Jennifer

I found your service EXTREMELY useful – however as I web developer I only need to install software on my clients machines about once a year. And even with quite a few clients a year, I wouldn’t use the product enough for the cost a month to be worth it for me.

However I have an idea for you – a per incident cost.

I would be happy to buy a single days ticket for about $10 a day. That way when I needed to install software on my clients machines I could buy the single day ticket. I guarantee that if I have a need for this product at this level of usage there are other people out there that also do.

I’ve started a thread at a forum I use of other web designers to canvas opinion if they would also like this sort of product – you might want to leave it a few days and then go and see the responses.

    Let me know your thoughts.

I think that as well as being useful for support it could also be useful for phone training and demonstrations of new layouts and variables.

Therefore people can anyone who would find this useful add a vote.

    Thanks

there is a free version - but the problem with that is the client has to sign up for it.

Then they have to give you the username and password which gives you access to their machine whenever you want it until they uninstall - and this requires a lot of trust on the part of the client.

With rescue rather than the free remote control client - the connection permission only remains until the session is over then you haven't any access to their machine until they choose to let you back in on another incident.

      Have you looked at this.

I think it does the same thing as you describe. I have used it a couple of times. There is a free version for personal use and the small business version is reasonably cheap at £236.

brilliant - well that's that one sorted then - that's a fraction of the price for the commercial version than the one offered by logmein rescue.

not really sure how they make money though - why doesn't everyone use the free one - I just downloaded the free one and there seem to be no checks or controls on whether you are using it for personal or business use.

Ah I get it - the free version only allows you 5 mins of connection to client computer for support so commercial users would upgrade.

However I think if they've got the software as well then this limit might not be imposed.
