Long Reference Numbers

Our Product Codes are sometimes 21 & 22 characters. Actinic is limited to 20 characters.

I was playing in the Database and managed to add the extra characters in the DB. Everything seems ok in Actinic.

Does anyone know what errors could occur with adding 1 - 2 extra numbers to the Reference field?
Is there a better way of increasing the charater length? (Already tried in the Business Settings)

The Actinic program expects the product reference code to be 20 characters long, I wouldn't advise extended it in the database, it may appear to work but there will be side effects - one possibilility might be truncation of the reference number in the order details downloaded after an order has been placed.
