    Interesting order numbers

I have just completed a site upgrade to v8 and entered some off line orders.

The order numbers used to run in sequence, but tonight the one I have entered have the sequence 0003, 00078, 0197, 0203, 0239, 0261, 0276, 0280.

These were all for a variety of different account customers.

Any idea while they are not sequential like the used to be?

Just realised that they are offline orders - no idea what would cause gaps there - presumably you entered them one after an other and no one else was entering orders?

You could always update the order number to start maybe at 1000+ to save confusion.

Yes they were all offline orders, entered one after another.

          James,

Have you raised a support ticket on this one as yet?

          Kind regards,

<Ponders aloud> Could offline orders be selecting "missing" sequence numbers from the existing table?

To investigate, look at the table and see what the next sequence gap is and then raise a dummy offline order and see if it picks up that number.

Bill - do you know at what stage an order number becomes assigned and how is this is monitored online to create sequential numbering?

Order number is assigned by the perl script as the user leaves checkout page 2 - does not matter whether they are off to a PSP or going on to the java app on checkout page 3 for capture.

This is how you get gaps in the order numbers - somebody gets a number, goes off to the PSP and changes their mind and just shuts down the browser.

The same perl script updates the online file used to keep track of the last number used. Although Actinic has no online database, it can still read and write to several online files (thinking customer accounts here).
