Removing fragments creates a problem

I maintain a v8.5.1 site for a client. This involves updating a brochure page for event dates, but when I remove old fragments (using Ctrl-X), the fragments are still there plus a couple of additional titles (see attachment dates-wrong-layout.jpg - the other one, dates-right-layout.jpg, is how it should look).

If I just delete (red cross) the fragments, it's fine, but I want to lose the fragments altogether. I don't really want to purge them out because there are other deleted items on the site that I don't want to lose.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Click on a different page, compact database and restart.

Actinic - is this a bug that can be fixed? The same fragment removal process is OK in v7.

The bug is still outstanding. I've upped the severity of it so it should be fixed in a future release.
