      er, no it isn't...

I've just realised there's a big problem with the express checkout option for paypal that appears on checkout page one.

You can press it without first choosing a country, in which case the shipping cost is wrongly calculated and VAT doesn't get applied. Yikes.

I'm calling Actinic about this today. It shouldn't be possible to get out of checkout page one without setting a country, even if you press the paypal button.

Remembering the road to Actinic enlightenment is a long and sometimes painful one.

PPP is a bit like having King Kong on your back. So discouraging after all this time that problems are still around, talk about bad reps before it even gets started.

I've just mentioned it to Actinic on the phone and they're going to look at it...

I suggested that a quick fix which would suit me would be to set the country to be United Kingdom (or whatever country the supplier is in) if not yet set by the punter. This would ensure (a) that something meaningful got sent to Paypal and (b) would have the side benefit that some sort of shipping charge would appear in the cart prior to checkout - i.e. charges to local destinations.

This would mean that when getting to checkout page 1 for the first time the country would be set already - to UK or whatever. This is still potentially wrong (for an export customer) but at least it will be doing something sensible.

Because I'm still tuning my zones and classes, I've got a default shipping price (of £55) to catch any potential buyer in a country I missed out. Last night a student from Middlesex bought a hard drive for £102, paid no VAT but paid £55 shipping. Of course they should have spotted something was wrong and backed out of the transaction but that's students for you...I fixed it by correcting the order in Actinic and then doing a partial refund in Paypal.

(of course it may be I've done something wrong; I'm realising there are several topics about this around the forum and I should (re)read them all. I got cocky when I originally set this up because it seemed to work great straight away. I was paying too much attention to the credit card payment gateway side of things and not enough to the express side. I noticed somebody somewhere mentioning a problem with refunds. I don't see this. I can do tests using my own card (i.e. my own money) and then simply refund the purchase straight away. What I can't do is test it with paypal express checkout without having a second paypal account - you can't pay yourself, says paypal - so I haven't checked this out as well as I should have.)
