Adding extra sidebars in smart theme

Hiya!

Could anybody tell me how to add extra sidebars in smart theme?

I want an extra one on the left and an extra one on the right, and I just want to put a little text in them.

I have only just got version 8 and know extremely little about html, so please explain in very basic terms!!

If this has been written about before, please could you point me in the right direction, coz I've searched 'til my head hurts

Search on "smart side boxes" ... most of the replies are v7 but the concept holds the same .. in v8 life is much more simple. Bare in mind when you see reference to "Act_Primary.html" this is now the Outer Layout in v8 ... and CUSTOMVAR's are now variables in the library.

I have used the following method to add extra sidebar boxes.

Go to Design - Library then select the layouts tab, scroll down to Custom Sidebar Boxes, expand this and you should see Left Custom SideBar Box and Right Custom SideBar Box. Right click either as required and choose option to copy, this creates a new layout which you can rename ie "LeftBox2", "RightBox2" etc.

Edit the layout as required, you can delete the variables for the header and content by replacing LEFTBARTITLE and LEFTBARTEXT with your own title and text.

Then with Design tab selected find the Layout Code view for the sidebar required and insert your new layouts.

I've just got the V9 upgrade from V 7.3 & sooo slowly attempting to convert the site. I have successfully created title & text variables & a layout (as described above) I've managed to get a sidebar to appear on the page preview but with nothing in it. Where in the Variable setup do i type the text that I want the side box to display?

Check in the library for these variables where you have set the 'place of setting' and under which 'panel' and that's where you can enter the values.

Place of setting: Site
Panel Name: Properties (I tried changing to Layout after your reply but still didn't work)

if your 'place of setting' is SITE, then you should find the prompt, to enter info into your new variable, in your Settings > Site Options in the 'Properties' panel

Got grey matter coming out of my ears trying to replicate what you've done here - I want a sidebar on the right like you have on your site, but I just can't do it - -where did you start?
