Adding Shipping Weight to all products & Actinic Database

    Hi

I am building a store and have so far created hundreds of products, but have not yet thought about shipping. I have read up on shipping and sorted my shipping tables out, but now I need to add a weight to every item.

I looked into exporting the database into a csv and re importing - but I have so many problems with Excel adding spare commas, taking things out of quotes and generally messing things up for Actinic that I don't think that is a good option? Editing the CSV in a basic editor is also a no go due to the size of the file & descriptions etc.

I have also just opened the database directly in Access and that looked like a possibility, but A) I wondered if it was safe to do and b) I could only find 'alternate weight' not just 'weight' in the 'Product' table?

Any alternate solutions? All comments welcome.

    Thanks
    Kev

If you backup before you do it, should be fine, although i would be more inclined to do it via flat file import myself. Remember to choose your most common weight and assign that as the default, you then do not need anything to be inserted on those products as they will use the site default weight.

So, I took the advice and am trying to do it via a file import.

I exported everything, removed every line except products (and the heading for products), added the weight (in the Shipping Data vertical) sorted the Excel CSV comma issue by adding a last heading of 'FULL' and fully populating that vertical and then just ignored it in the import.

The import went fairly well, except for 70 or so (out of 500 products) gave the error:

"Line 3: The given section cannot be found, please check its name. The fragment is still imported but its link is disabled"

A few example lines that have the error are 3, 8 and 10 in the following.

      Code:
      Header:Product,Product Reference,Short Description,Full Description,Report Description,Price,Image Filename,Can be Ordered Online,Max Quantity Orderable,Min Quantity Orderable,Date Prompt Text,Other Info Prompt,Detail URL or File,Detail Link Text,Hide on Web Site,Shipping Data,Price Text,Button Text,Use External Data,Stock Checks Enabled,Stock in Hand,Stock Warning Level,Stock Suspend Level,Pricing Model,Ship Separately,V4 Tax 1 Data,IsDeleted,No Order Line For Main Product,Date Prompt Minimum Year,Date Prompt Maximum Year,Generate Popup Page,Extended Info Text,Extended Info Image,Display By Image,Display By Link,Display By Button,Extended Info Page Name,Extended Info Link Text,Digital Download File Name,Auto Ship,Product Group ID,Product Type,Original Product Reference,Product Duplicate Index,Fragment Layout,Linked Item ID,Link Type,Is Linked,Fragment Title,Fragment Text,Fragment Image File Name,Image Clickable,Link Text,Exclude From Froogle Data Feed,Thumbnail,nContentCategory,Include in BestSellers List,Include in New Products List,Include in Also Bought Lists,Exclude From Shipping,Shipping Supplement Applied Once,Shipping Supplement,Handling Supplement Applied Once,Handling Supplement,Alternative Weight,Shipping Category,Shipping Quantity,ExtendedInfoPageDesign,ExtInfoWindowWidth,ExtInfoWindowHeight,ProductLayout,ProductImageLayout,AttributeList,PriceLayout,ComponentList,ProductPriceDescription,ExtendedInformationLinks,AttributeColumnCount,ExtendedInformationType,PushButtonGrid,NumberAttributesInPushButtonGrid,YourPricePrefix,RetailPricePrefix,,FULL

I am unable to tell the difference between lines that failed and lines that didnt, I am not even sure how it is counting line numbers, starting at the first line of the file? counting the blank line? starting at the first product?

Looking in Actinic I can't find anything broken, but I dont want to just leave it and hope understandably....

      All help appretiated.

P.S. I remembered the other Excel problem, it doesnt put the same things in double quotes ("), so I re made the changes above in a plain txt editor eithout using Excel at all, so exactly the same number of commas per line, quotes in the same places etc, but I still get the same error.

      Thanks
      Kevin

Answering my own question, I finally manged to get it to work (well working around the issue) with no errors by removing all verticals except the 'Product' descriptor, the 'Product Ref' and the 'Shipping Data' (ie weight) vertical.

Inputing just these verticals works without errors.

        Cheers
