I'd like to have my store front on the homepage. Is putting in a redirect from index.html to catalog/index.html the only way?

No, it's not the only way, but given that you have had to ask, it is probably out of your ability to recreate to be honest. Is there any particular reason why you don't like the redirect?

there are a few solutions, but really, the shop front page or 'brochure' page is a good idea. it lets you display some offers and products before people get to your main products.

its more useful from an seo perspective.

you could use your .htaccess to redirect the frontpage. as well as some ways that have previously been discussed on the forum.
