90% of my site I would like the customers to have instant access to both info and prices without a need to login. The remaining 10% I would like the info visible but the pricing hidden - unless they are authorised to have access. Can I make selective products require a login and not others?

Have a look in the AUG at the solutions provided for these areas. I'd strongly suggest moving to sections that can or cannot be seen rather than individual products. You will end up in knots if you try and do too much, unless of course you are one product per page. Having said that you'd still want to hide the empty section. -
