Exchange products

I have a couple of products, there are hand carved and can be bought as it shown or carved on to customers product, if they send to us, so I want to offer an exchange program.
They buy the completed carved product, and save us buying another item to carve, they get a refund or rebate when ordering if they send us there redundant product thats being replaced.
In the component section/ permutations tab it will not allow a negative amount ie -£50.
How can i get round this?

The way we do it is we have the price shown as net (assuming we will receive the exchange) and the core deposit as a separate (required) line item. The customer pays the deposit and receives a refund when we receive their like, rebuildable unit. We also have text to the effect of "if you want to send your item in advance to save the core charge, please contact our office"
