    Page Titles - Best Practice

    Hi,

When I first made my site about a year ago I looked into best practice for page titles. I was concerned about this as I wanted google to index my site correctly.
If I remember correctly it was recommended:

    Imperial-Chinese-Weaponry-255BC-1911-AD.html

But actinic wants to default to this every time I add a new page:

    Imperial_Chinese_Weaponry_255_BC_-_1911_AD.html

What are other people using for page title best practices? Which style should I adopt?

I think you're confusing page titles with page names.

The page filename is the bit that ends in .html

The page title is the page description and appears in the very top bar of your browser (well, IE at any rate).

You can edit the page filename to what ever you want it to be - it's on the Page Settings tab. Actinic is merely suggesting a page filename based on the name you gave the page. It is splitting up component parts of the page name to generate a filename. I would go with your version - it is much more meaningful.

Yes your right. Sorry about that. Its file name i want!

from my understanding the way you choose your file name can have a big effect on the way google indexes you and there are best practices for making file names.

They recently updated Leigh to now class an _ the same as a -, so no reason at all to change that part any more. They now have equal importance.

I will just let actinic suggest titles in the future in that case.

          Thanks very much.

I wouldn't rely on Actinic to do that. You should verify each one. Actinic will make a very good job of most but, as you've shown with your example, you can tinker and make it better.

I'm referring to the way Actinic splits up component parts of the page name i.e. 255BC ending up being split rather than the use of "-" vs. "_".
