    Deliver to a seperate address

My customer isn't happy with how the delivery address option works.

    At the moment, you:
    • Click on "If you want the delivery address to be different from the invoice address, please check this box:"
    • Then you go to the next page and enter your invoice address
    • Then, you go to the next page and it finally asks for your shipping address.

My customer finds this confusing and so do her friends/family. Is there any way the Shipping address fields can be on the same page as the invoice address when the "If you want the delivery address to be different from the invoice address, please check this box:" is checked?

No, not without extensive rejigging. It's due for an overhaul, let's hope it gets it soon.

      Oh Crap...

When you say "not without rejigging" - so it is actually possible, but it involved alot of messing around? have you done it before?

Don't even consider or think any more about it, the checkout is one thing that you just accept with Actinic, leave it well alone or age prematurely. Removal of the location question on page 1 is the only thing i've ever seen.

Why not tackle this from a different perspective.

Work with the pages/forms as they are and aim to improve comprehension of what they do and why they are there.

e.g. Include nice icons, good headings, compelling descriptive text of the invoice and delivery address pages to clearly differentiate them and clarify their meaning to the customer.
Any checkout process can be confusing, 1 page or otherwise, without clear presentation and concise explanation and instruction.

Just a thought - you may be surprised by the result and your clients change of heart...

Hi I have being having this thought for a while about the problem with the checkout.

I wonder if anyone thinks this might work?

            1) Having the delivery address chosen by default (which we can do).
            2) When you get the to the delivery address either;
            - copy the invoice address in automatically, which could then be edit to a different address by the customer.
            - or, have a button that would copy the invoice address into delivery if the customer wanted to use the same to safe them typing it all again.

Does anyone have any idea if this might work without to much work?

            Cheers

              Jethro,
Firstly, if the delivery address is to be the same as the invoice address then the customer would never see the delivery address screen. It states clearly in the checkbox option

"If you want the delivery address to be different from the invoice address, please check this box:"

Secondly, why would you want the invoice address copied across, only then to be edited to a different address by the customer. This surely increases the chances of the customer leaving some incorrect data unedited and hence invalidating the address.....?

Lastly, "Having the delivery address chosen by default?"?
What default would that be? Actinic remembers returning customers details if the check the remember me option. Postcode anywhere's lookup can eliminate the need for most of the address details to be entered.
It doesn't make sense to me why you would have a default address entered? Perhaps you could expand your question to explain in more detail? Perhaps I am missing the point and where you are coming from.

                Hi Fergus,

"If you want the delivery address to be different from the invoice address, please check this box:"

                The problem

Because our customer have to choose the delivery locations this appears on checkout page 0, so they have to choose this before they have even seen the cost of carriage or the methods available (ie. post or courier), some people only then decide whether they want a separate delivery address. Other people decide after entering the invoice address, that they would like to ship to a different address, at this point they can hit the change button, but this takes them back to the checkout page 0 which can be confusing. Also some people have reported hitting the change button in an attempt to change the delivery address.

The customer see's checkout page 3 anyway so I don't see the harm them seeing an address that is defined as the delivery address, but if they could copy the invoice address in if they want to ship to the same address to avoid retyping that’s what I am thinking of.

                Does that make more sense?

                  Hi Jethro,

What you're describing makes sense to me. In essence you're thinking of presenting both address forms to all your customers and pre-filling the delivery address one so that customers can just click next if they don't want to change it to a different delivery address.

The pre-filling shouldn't be too hard to do in Javascript. Just save the invoice address data to a cookie and then fetch it again for the delivery address. You'll need to write your own code to do this.

It will only work for those with javascript enabled so you have to factor that in.

The question you have to answer is whether it's better to make all your customers go through an extra checkout screen in a logical order rather than just those who want a different delivery address having a confusing time of it.

                  Mike

                    Hi Mike,

you’ve got the idea, and I am keen to make it more logical, the customer sees the page with the delivery address anyway when they choose their payment method, so there isn't any extra pages.

                    Cheers
